I usually take about 1 and a half to two hours to read 30 pages while highlighting at the same time. Is that too slow? Any suggestions to speed up my reading while fully or almost fully understanding the material?

Yeah, that's quite awhile. The best way to get through it is by reading the first and last sentece of each paragraph only. Statistically speaking, the main idea of a paragraph is stated on the first or last line 90-95% of the time. Usually professors will only test for that, so there is no point in reading the inbetween unless you know that detail was strongly discussed in class.

There is no specific amount of time on how long anyone should take to read something--but that does seem a bit lengthy. I like the suggestion that the previous answerer had. Also, I would recommend first reading the questions at the end of the chapter and then looking for the answers in the subtitles in the chapter. Unless your teacher is really anal, and you really need to know exact details, I would just skim the chapters. I would pay more attention to the lectures because that is often where the test questions are.

You could practice reading more and concentrating on the matter while reading, so you know what you're reading. practice is the only way to get through it honestly.

Try to stay awake while reading, that always helps the speed.
