I think that it terms of society, American society offers a sort of pressure to break the rules and indulge-- rebellion is pretty much etched into the term "American" (at least in the eyes of many foreigners). Drinking is no different; people rebel against the notion of staying sober (which incidentally is also "uncool") and indulge.

Also Americans have a tendency to be more stressed than others. The rate of alcoholism may have some connection to stress.

A lot of it comes down to how we define alcoholism.
Medically its when you have more than a couple of drinks a month - no lie.
In psychology, its when you have more than a couple a week.
Also, countrys with the largest populations such as china and india from upon alcohol use.

People want what they can't have. Why do you want that sports car when your normal car does the same thing (Gets you from A to B) Because you can't haveit you want it.
