You would want a network card, preferably a 10/100 or 100 MBps card. If your laptop is newer, you should have one. It would look like the phone jack, but a little bigger. Then you would need a cord to attach to a cable or dsl modem. Some cable modems come with usb attachments as well, so you may be able to use the usb connection on the modem.
If you are asking about hooking up to a modem that already has a computer connected to it, you will need a router. If you get a router, make sure your laptop has wireless and hook it up that way. Dlink and Netgear and SMC make really good routers that are easy to hook up.

The size of the card as nothing to do with the size of the laptop.... what are you referring to? You won't even see the NIC card....
