Kacky is exactly backwards!! The best time is late fall or winter. The WORST time is summer, when the wind and heat are going to greatly stress the plant. You CAN still plant then, but you have to make sure that they get lots of water every day for several weeks.

Either mid spring when the ground water tables are up or early fall when the trees/shrubs are getting ready to do dormate for the winter months.

Most trees can be planted any time during decent weather. It really depends on where you live and what sort of tree you are planting. I would go to Home Depot (if it dies they will return it) and check with them. Make sure you know how much sun it gets and they will show you some options.

I live in a warm temperate zone (zone 9). We always plant our trees in autumn/winter, as this is allows them to develop roots before they get their leaves in spring. Shrubs are planted in autumn or spring, and perennials are always planted in autumn. Obviously if you are in a very cold area this would be different again.

Tree species that can be successfully planted in the fall include maple, buckeye or horsechestnut, catalpa, hackberry, hawthorn, ash, honeylocust, Kentucky coffeetree, crabapple, Amur corktree, spruce, pine, sycamore, and linden. Most deciduous shrubs are easily planted in fall; however, broad-leaved evergreens like rhododendron and narrow-leaved evergreens like yew prefer to be planted in the spring.
