I am getting ready to graduate from college in NC and my home is NY. I'm trying to decide whether I should move back home or not. On a salary of 40k - 45k would I be able to live comfortably on Long Island with apartments in the range of 1100k to 1400k and everything else needed to live comfortably. If you live in NY and know from experience please help me out, even if you don't too.

Long Island is east of Manhattan and definitely exists. It is an ISLAND, check the maps if you don't know. Home to Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. (A little F.Y.I)

on 40 - 45k it would be tough to make it in LI if you're paying 1,100 - 1,400 for rent. First off, you won't have that much left over after rent and if you live in LI you'll need transportation. You know a car can be expensive and if you rely on public trans that get costly too.

I would advise you to look into basement apt. or roommates/parents or find a job that's going to pay at least 50k and up.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career. If you made 40k after taxes, you could afford a $933 apartment, and still live well.
