It will make a difference. The difference will depend on what programs you are running and the configuration of the rest of your computer.
Also, make sure you know how many slots you have available! Many laptop manufacturers use all available slots because 2 - 512MBs instead of 1 - 1GB. This would mean your amount of memory would move from 1GB to 1.5GB not increasing your memory to 2GB. So make sure you consider this fact.

It depends on how much you currently use. If you are a memory intensive user then adding another stick might do you some good. Filling up 1GB of RAM is not done by running 5 internet explorer windows and your favorite music player...

The more the better; I have 4 gig in mine. That's extreme, but my work demands it. 2 gig would give you a nice performance.
Check on your configuration though - sometimes you can't just "add" RAM, but you have to thoroughly replace what you have with a new set of chips.

XP is memery hog. If you are running memory intensive programs such as PhotoShop you have a lot of programs running in the background then I would add the Ram.

no this is not true. although it may seem not like much, but if you add an addishinal gig to your laptop it will make the harddrive actualy like a little bit longer while at the risk of top speed!
