Water temperature is a very personal preference. My low-limit is 58, anything below that I wear a wetsuit. 69-72 is a great temp for distance swimming, you don't overheat and it's warm enough to keep your core temp from dropping substantially. In 69-72 degree water I would say you could stay in for hours provided you are moving, however, if you're simply lazing about or floating around you may get cold quicker. Just be smart and aware of your body's signals. If you feel cold, start moving or get out. If you're with someone else make sure you watch each other for signs of impending hypothermia like pale skin, blue/purple lips, white nailbeds and shivering.

One thing to be aware of with open water is the wind; exiting the water on a windy day can chill a person so make sure if there's an ocean breeze you have your towel close at hand!

I live on the Atlantic and I'm in the water just about year round. I've found that people who grew up in colder water are a lot more tolerant of colder temperatures than those who are not used to swimming in the ocean in say, February haha. However, the more you get in and swim in colder water the more tolerant you will become. The main thing is to be aware of your own body and don't force yourself to stay in too long, it's not worth the risk.

Another fun (or not...) way to teach your body to tolerate colder water temps is to submerge in a bath of cool water. It will make you shiver but you can get out right away and you will learn your body's responses.

Good luck!

Depends on your body makeup, are you thin, stocky, the higher the body fat the longer you will last. I'm 6'3" 200lbs and I could stay in all day with not much of a problem.
