Joe Hill's book, A Heart-Shaped Box was great. It was spooky without going overboard.

I would highly recommend some classic novels. Always a good thriller is George Orwell's "1984" about a dystopian society in the future. John Grisham novels "The Bretheren" and "Runaway Jury" are great reads if you're looking for a book to keep you entertained and enthralled with each passing page.
