You are talking about Donnie Moore.

He was the Angels closer. in the mid 80's. He was a good pitcher too.

In 1986, the Angels were playing the Redsox in the ALCS. The Angels had a 3-1 lead in this series and a lead going into the 9th. They call out their ace reliever, Moore. 1 more out and its time to face the Mets or Astros in the World Series the next week.

He let's up a game winning home run to Dave Henderson. They lose the game and then lose the series.

Donnie Moore's personal and professional life began to unwravel after this series of events.

He later (3 years) committed suicide. Sad story. Donnie Moore was by most accounts a good guy and a good teammate. This was just too much for him. The only problem was that he shot his wife though. That was bad as far as history remembering him fondly. You can't shoot your wife. She did live though.

Actually, it was a League Championship Series game. The 1986 American League Championship Series game five played at Anaheim. The Angels were one out away from winning the league championship when David Henderson hit a home run off of DONNIE MOORE. The Red Sox came back to tie or lead the game. The contest went into extra innings and the BoSox managed to win the game and stay alive in the post-season. The series shifted back to Boston where the Red Sox clinched the American League Championship. The remainder of Donnie Moore's stay in Anaheim (1987-8), he was constantly booed for that one error. In 1989, after his release from the Kansas City Royal organization, he committed suicide.

That was Donnie Moore and it was actually the American league pennant.

I think it was 1986. He was a closer for the Angels and he gave up a home run to Dave Henderson that either tied or won a game for the Red Sox.

It really is pretty sad when fans won't let a guy forget a mistake like that. Donnie Moore was a good pitcher, too. he killed himself a few years after that I think.

Don't remember that one all I know is as a RED SOX Fan I can tell you, that the one Player that screwed the World Series for us was Bill Buckner, in the 1986 World Series against the Mets when the ball went through his legs when they we're up 7 to 6 in Game 6 and two runs scored for New York, Mets won 9 to 7 and the Next Night Ray Knight scored 3 Run Homer to Help the Mets win the World Series in Game 7.

The Red Sox could've ended the Curse of Babe Ruth that Night, but Buckner screwed Up and so did the RED SOX, 18 the Curse would finally end by beating the Cardinals in four Straight, so we did make up for that lose.

Donnie Moore. It was the 1986 A.L. Championship Series, not the World Series.

Donnie Moore was pitching for the Angels and gave up a game winner to Dave Henderson of the Red Sox in 1986. I think he killed his wife too, but I may be wrong. He pitched until 1988 I believe.

Are you people serious?

Yes it was Donnie Moore, they were playing the Red Sox but it was not the NLCS because both teams were in the American League. Therefore it was the ALCS.

It wasn't just the homerun that caused him to take his own life, however.

PS to the Red Sox fans... the other player that screwed you was Aaron Boone.

Jose Mesa Cleveland Indians 1997 without a doubt! I'd like to kill him still!
OOPs! Sorry I didn't see the part where you said he killed himself. I thought it was fans wanted to kill him. Or perhaps that was wishful thinking on my part!?
So here is what I found on wikipedia about Donnie Moore...
On July 18, 1989, all of the repercussions of the 1986 loss—the decline and now end of his baseball career and serious marital and financial difficulties—along with his battle with alcoholism, drug abuse, and severe depression, finally overcame him. During an argument with his wife Tonya, Moore shot her three times, the incident occurring in witness of their three children. Tonya Moore and daughter Demetria, then 17 years of age, fled from the house and Demetria drove her mother to the hospital. Both survived the shooting.

Back inside the house, still in the presence of one of his sons, Moore then shot himself. He would die of the self-inflicted wound at the age of 35.
