Sounds like the timing chain or gears have jumped time . To check turn the crank pulley to top dead center and see if number one the piston is at top of cylinder., with the valves closed. If not you buy a new timing set and gaskets and put it back to proper timing. Either that or the distributor was way out of time to begin with You can do the same test as you check the engines mechanical timing.

this model year had 2 systems, computer advance and mechanical advance. if there is a vacuum hose to the distributor, make sure you are getting manifold vac. to the unit, and make sure the advance unit functions properly. if it is ecc4(comp control) there is a "spout connector" that needs to be disconnected to adjust the timing. spec is 12btdc low alt, 14 high alt. also be sure the battery and starter is in good condition. the engine should crank fine even with the timing advanced significantly. e-mail me if you need step by step procedures, and specify which system you have. good luck

What Degree are you setting the timing to to where it runs well? On that motor it should be set at around 4 to 6 Degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) RPM should be set at 800-900 RPM. You should use a timing light to set the timing. if you have it too far advanced or retarded it will not start.
