Not mulch, wood chip for a path! There is a path through the woods to get to my parents house! 4 wheelers, and people would be the only things using the trail! Usually it is very muddy, so I thought about using wood chips, from the tree cutters going down my road to use to walk/ ride on so itdoesn't get so muddy? What do u think?

You have a GREAT idea!! The back part of our property is clay soil. In the winter there was NO way that we could go out there - just too muddy!! Then I covered the area with woodchips/mulch and now I can walk around all the veggie boxes and everywhere else!! I need to replenish it about every two years. Since I am an organic grower, the part that I like best is that the chips will decompose into the soil. If you put down rocks, you can NEVER plant anything! I usually put down a 3 to 4 inch layer. You might want to make it thicker if you are going to drive on it.

In our area all the tree cutter/trimmers give away the chips for free. Give the tree people a call. Sometimes you get lucky. My friend recently got a load of cedar chips -- boy does his yard smell good!!

Good Luck!

How much rain do you get? Sometimes there is a problem with the wood chips floating away if the ground isn't very level. Other than that is sounds like a great idea.

I think it would work. The parks around here are using wood chips now on the playground. It helps a lot with the mud.

you should use small gravel and hire a roller to flatten them into dampish soil to get a nice even flat path. Wood chips just rot and poison the soil that all the plants need to survive.

I think that would work very well because the woodchips would soak up some of the water from the mud.

i dont think its such a good idea, but if its free try it. I think it will probably turn into a woodchip mud pie. Do you have any access to some gravel?

Won't help with the mud. You'll just get bulkier mud clods!
