How to Make Hand Hewn Beams?

make box beams look hand hewn.i know how to do the miter and fit together.and how to make the edgers look stressed but not sure on the flat parts.

go get a draw knife & stasr shaving

public tv had a guy who only used old tools to do such thing

hand hued means you sat on the log & with a combination of axe & draw knife, you squared it off!

I guess the lumber you use would have a lot to do with the look you achieve. Try to match your grain up on the long miters to make it look as if it were milled from a single timber. Also tighter grains are found in the center portion of trees so you would want to use loose grained lumber since the portion of your beam that would be visible would be from the older growth or outer part of the tree. Lastly, if the wood is smooth you might actually want to rough it up a bit. True beams never have a glass-like finish.

I think your in luck, Hand Hewn Beams look Ruff. Don't worry so much and do the things the other fellow said. your the only one who is really going to be critical.of your work.
Find an old draw a hewn the beams by hand.
Projects look best when done.

use a block plane and make passes with the knife set at different depths, this will simulat the look of the old az tools and remember you aren't going for perfect symetry so have fun with it!
