They're essentially the same thing now. But once upon a time, a box was the term used for a container made of wood. Cartone is Italian for pasteboard, and cartons are almost always made of cardboard. These days though both are often made from cardboard so the terms just kind of blended together. Sometimes a carton (say, of cigarettes) will contain several boxes, sometimes the other way 'round -- it all depends on who fills the box.

A box is an empty container while a carton has spaces for the contents inside. A carton of eggs holds each individual eggs, a carton of cigerettes holds many packs, but a box is always just a square with no individual spaces at all.

I think a box is smaller than a carton. You mentioned cigarettes, there are 10 packs in a carton. Cartons are usually heavy and hold lots.

They may be the same. A pancake is a flapjack or a hotcake. A frying pan is a skillet. Etc. Just different names for the same thing. The word to use just depends on the part of the country or region you live in.
