When we turn the tower on, it sounds like a vaccum cleaner and like the fan is working overtime. Any suggestions on how to make it stop??

It's probably dirty/dusty inside. You need to buy a can of compressed air and unhook it and take it outside. The side cover should come off and blow out the dust. Especially around the fan's. I had to do this about a month ago and it took care of the problem.

Hi. First make sure there are no CDs or DVDs in the Dell. If not you may have collected enough dust after a year to need to clean out the heatsink and fans. Check your hard drive. to see it the noise is coming from there and if so consider replacing it.

Is there a CD in the CD drive? Sounds like it could be a CD spinning up to speed. Or possibly your fan. Have you opened the computer case and cleaned it out? If it's very dusty/dirty inside, it could be the fan spinning at higher speeds to keep the CPU cool. Try spraying it out with canned air.

it could be the hard drive, better make sure you have everything backed up in case it goes out soon. Get a zip drive or an external hard drive. I have a Dell that did the same thing and it finally went out and I lost some important things. Learned the hard way

You have programs running the background probably. To check, disconnect from your Internet connection. Click on Start, run, type in mscofig. Selecect selective start up. Disable all programs. Restart. Cick the box so that it will to restart again. See if your computer runs normal. I so then repeat but us normal start up. you will need to go through the selective startup process, eliminating one program at time untill you find the problem. You might first run several spyware programs to see if you have spyware.
