'Where are you from?' is different from 'Where are you from originally?' because 'Where are you from?' can mean that you could have moved here from Chicago, and from Chicago from Los Angeles. 'Where are you from originally?' means where you were born.

chris is wrong. Certainly we were taught not to end a sentence with a preposition, but "where are you from?" is the exception. No one say "From where are you?" do they. No.

"Where are you from" is incorrect grammar because you should never end a sentence with a preposition.
