American History (1850-1870) intro & essay help.?

Question

Well I was given the topic "An overview of American history from 1850-1870. Focus on major events, their causes and effects" Here's my intro:

The 1850s-1870s were a very important time in America that contained a large mixture of events. It was a time that touched subjects that included war, slavery and religion. There were many events that characterized 1850-1870 in America.

It's kind of weak and I couldn't seem to make it any better, I'll appreciate any criticism or help! :)
Also, for organizing the body paragraphs I was thinking of just doing two, one of 1850-1859, and the other of 1860-1869, any suggestions?
