what makes a sad story sad? (besides the obvious things) What do you add to a piece of writing to made it a (good) sad story?

That would be up to you as the author - there is no formula - boy meets girl - girl gets leukemia - boy loses girl - kind of thing ... The important element in making a story sad is making the reader CARE about the characters. I think all the hoopla about Harry Potter possibly dying is a good example. If you can come up with characters that are realistic and well rounded and that the readers truly care about, then you put them in some kind of tragic situation and it becomes a sad story. Think of the movie Pay it Forward - the element of surprise helps, too.If things are going along swimmingly for these characters then something horrific and unexpected happens, that's sad. The trick is to work very hard on your character studies so your characters are loveable and then work on your plots and subplots in your outline. Good luck - Pax - C.

have these two people fall in love, and then when they are on a vacation to wherever, let them go to this really pretty place, and have let the girl kidnapped and thenlet theboyfriend almost save her, but then let him get shot by his best friend, because his best friend fell in love with the girl. :0
heheheheh i know the worst story you ever heard, but it was sad so yeah.

kill somebody you have developed well throughout the story and who the reader has gotten close to.
Ex. two lovers survive the story = one of them gets offed in the end
