So I've been accepted to NYU, Chapman, and USC. I guess the big debate then is, east coast film vs. west. I've heard great things about all the schools, and alot of negatives. NYU esspecially seems to be great for indie film making, which is really what I'm interested in... where as USC seems to just shoot you out into the studio system. So thats great and all, but I'll still need to make money, obviously. Will a school like NYU, so far away from Hollywood and the studio system prepare me to make the right connections in Hollywood? I'd hate to spend 4 years there and a rediculous amount of money, and have nothing to show for it.

The fact of the matter is: There is a "debate". Are you getting answers from people who actually go to these schools or people who just talk from hearsay?

I currently study film at NYU and I love it. I transferred from USC because I didnt like the method of teaching they provided me at SoCal. It depends on how you see the film industry: Art or business? They are both good schools and have produced tons of successful people, but have also produced people who are still serving tables or working fast food. NYU has more oscar winners than any american university despite the fact its so far from Hollywood, USC has Lucas who practically can be found dry-humping the side of the school every other day. (By which, I mean he is an avid supporter of the school and is always involved).

I love NYU, and hated USC. The lifestyle is polar opposites and that, again, is up to what you are looking for. NYU is a totally independent life, and USC is ,like most colleges, a continuation of high school. Both have pros and cons. The point is- as a filmmaker, you can't make good films if you are not happy or in a place that inspires you artistically.

I'm sure you will be happy with the choice you make either way. NYU has really bad financial aid, keep that in mind. USC is in Compton and you may get shot. Keep that in mind :-) The NYU lifestyle is amazing, but might be overwhelming to those who can't handle it. Los Angeles was cool, but all the driving and parking tickets negated the fact that USC's financial aid was good.

As for Chapman... I dont know. I have a friend at NYU who transfered out of Chapman, only because she got into NYU.

Good Luck and congrats in getting into film school in the first place. That sh*t is hard.

If I had to decide it would be between Chapman and NYU but since I live in California NYU would be ridiculous expensive for me so then that would leave me Chapman. My friend goes there and he was able to do some story on the Oscars. I would think you would have more chances getting cool opportunities to work with huge events up in the LA/Orange County area. NYU seems more mellow and more artsy.

Plus Chapman is in an area where Im sure you would have better connections to Hollywood when you're done with college but dont take my advice too seriously, you should definitely make the choice yourself.

Im not too familiar with USC other than its a really good school...

Congrats on getting into those schools :]

There is no debate. USC will get you a top paying job once you graduate. Everyone I know from that program at USC is making a lot of money now.
