White light is actually comprised of the seven primary colors. If you have ever seen a prism or even the reflection of sunlight off of a compact disc you can see this. It is still amazing to know that sunlight hitting all those water droplets makes such a spectacular sight.

Water drops in the air act as prisms for the white light of sunlight, breaking it up into its component parts. The colors that you see are basically those which are most easily seen by the human eye, although the entire spectrum of colors is actually present.

The rainbow is just a small quantity of water floating in the air. The light that passes through that curtain of water is defracted and therefore you see the whole spectrum of solar light.
