It depends on how much you're borrowing from the friend. Like, I'll be out with friends and if they can't pay for dinner or something I'll cover them and then next time they'll cover me. It's like we'll treat each other but really we're not actually. To me, if anything, that helps our friendship because we're giving each other things back and forth but we stay farely even. Now, if it's large amounts of money, say for an investment in a new business, or for a large purchase I'd say yes that does hurt a friendship. They will feel the need to be apart of what the money goes towards because they want to see their money well spent. Even if you pay them back quickly they will still be like "well, you're new coffehouse is only doing so well because of the money I loaned you", I think you catch my drift here.

Hi Catie, I tend to agree. If a friend cannot pay the money back, and do not give a reasonable excuse for not doing so, it can cause a rift in the friendship or worse and end to it all together. I suppose lending small amounts is acceptable. You would have to have a very good friend who you could trust implicitly to be able to lend large amounts. My dad always said: 'Never be a borrower or lender.'

If the friend is short $5. or $10., that's one thing, but any more can cause problems!! No, don't do it.
Don't borrow or lend. If, by chance, it can't be paid back (& it does happen), then the borrower always avoids the lender out of quilt or just not wanting to being asked for the money. Even if they don't ask for the money, the guilt is stil there and the friendship suffers or can eventually end.
If you value the friendship, please keep money out of it.

Think it would depend on how much and if it got paid back. It would end in sour grape's if you didn't pay back the money also its embarrassing for a friend to refuse. You shouldn't put them in that position. So yes I agree.....it can harm a friendship..

I totally agree. Depending on the individuals, borrowing anything may end a friendship.

I thoroughly agree. I agree because I make it a fringe of my existence to consistently make human beings count number number. no count number number the position i'm or what i'm doing I consistently have my telephone on vibrate or ring so i'd be there for my acquaintances.

I can tell you from experience it does.
A long time ago I lent a friend a fair bit of money, he couldn't pay it back, and I never asked for it, but my friend felt guilty embarrassed and never spoke to me again.
An it annoys me 'cus it was only money, who cares? if you can help you do.
We were very close, but I guess it can do strange things to people.
