My friend is in his 20's and he feels that right now in his life, he really wants to focus on getting school done, solving and dealing with financial stress, work, etc...I've noticed that he's matured alot in the way he talks and the way he carries himself. He was always the guy who was "too nice" but now doesn't take any sh*t. He doesn't go out as much anymore - not every weekend - he'll drink on some ocassion.

Just recently, we found out that we've liked each other for the longest time but doesn't wanna pursue anything w. me right now because of all those things i've mentioned above. He's soo into making things work for him in his life right now. He said that when we do go out, he wants it to be "long lasting and serious" but that's not right now. The thing that surprised me was that he didn't make any promises to me (like what other guys usually do)

Is this guy in that "manhood" stage? Is he putting off a relationship with me cuz he cares?

He sounds like he is very mature. If you would like to call this his manhood stage, that could apply. You are children for a very short time, but adults for a very long time. The preparation he is doing now will create an excellent foundation for his entire life.
Not everyone matures at the same rate, so you may not be a good match at this time. I hope you are working hard towards college and career, as well. Some people can incorporate a social life into their school days, and others don't. Recognize how serious he is about this, and respect that. If you both finish school, and still have feelings for each other, you may want to start dating. But you may both have changed in ways that don't lead you back to each other. Don't dispair, these are all ways in which we learn to mature.

I should hope so, you can't be children forever, although some men try.....:)
