I was told by my doctor that I could use glycerin suppositories. They worked wonderfully.

Dulcolax suppositories. Lots and lots of water. Preparation-H cream because you will be sore after you have this first bowel movement. Have you spouse also pick-up some Kleenex wet wipes so you don't further irritate the area w/paper. After the ordeal you may also want to sit in a warm bathwater that's about 2-3inches for 5-10minutes. Coil a small towel into a donut to sit on. The warm water will help ease the swelling. Milk of magnesia, stool softeners, fibers only work from the top down. Your stool has most likely become plug-like. You have to remove the plug before the rest of the bowel can empty. It's not a good idea to go more than 2-3 days w/o a bowel movement especially when pregnant. If you are unable to have a movement after suppository you may need to go to hospital for help.

I bought a bag of prunes and ate a few every day. That really helped, but it also didn't give me diahrea which is good. I also drank LOTS of liquids. You feel like you might float away, but it helps. I don't know if you want to do this, but I did it in the last week of my pregnancy because the constipation was so bad...use an enema. It works immediately and is easier.
I also would just eat TONS of fruits and veggies, that works pretty fast too. I'd buy the small bag of frozen mixed veggies (they come with a garlic butter sauce or other flavors) and just eat the whole thing for lunch. Stay away from bananas, pasta, potatoes, breads/rolls. Those cause constipation! Good luck! I know how you feel, its horrible!

Honestly, incorporating whole grains, fresh fruits & veggies, and lots of water into your pregnancy diet will help you more than anything else. Limit any junk foods and that should help alleviate the problem. I eat Fiber One honey-toasted cereal with either fresh raspberries or blueberries every morning and then have something else fibrous during the day (like a banana or Kashi granola bar), and sometimes whole-wheat pasta for dinner, and I have not been constipated ONCE during pregnancy. And I'm 40 weeks! It's sometimes hard to eat so healthy, but I did not want to be constipated and I also wanted to make as many healthy choices as I could.
Just a suggestion...do what works for you...but eating naturally fibrous foods will work better than any supplement, not to mention that you and your baby will get more nutrients from regular food.

Glycerin suppositories are safe for immediate reliefe basically non is absorbed into the blood stream.
Metamucil and/or any other fibre is also completely safe, basically it is the same as you would get from dietary sources.
Stool softeners are much safer than laxatives and I don't know of one that can't be taken during pregnancy.

I would try stool softeners, and metamucil, and lots of water. That's what I did. Some of it couldn't be helped which really sucked! I would check out those glycerine suppositories(not sure if they are ok while pregnant) but I do know that if it's becoming a big problem, the doctor will ok things to help. It also appears that taking the prenatal vitamin might be one of the causes, although it is important to take of course. hope that helped somewhat..

Most women suffer from constipation during pregnancy, mostly your body is using more water than normal.. Just drink lots of water and fruits and vegetables with lots of water in them.

I agree with your first answer. Have your hubby go to the drugstore. Now!! After that, make sure you drink plenty of water everyday, eat raisin bran, or just eat raisins or prunes. I would still call your doctor tomorrow just to let them know whats going on. Hope you feel better soon!!

docusate sodium/sennosides and/or glycerin suppositories are you only drug options. I would not take bisacodyl (which was recommended earlier).
Of course, the previous advice to drink lots of water is the single most important one. I'd bet you aren't drinking enough. Yes, I know it's irritating having to pee all the time!
