I am a teacher in my mid-20's. I have applied to several school districts on the Gulf coast of Florida - Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, Lee County, and Collier County. Which of these areas are the best choices for me? I am looking for fun and excitement and a chance to make new friends semi-easily. Any input?!?!?

I noticed you posted this question in Vegas as well. I would suggest going there. You'll probably make more and have an easier time making friends there. FL is not an easy place to get to know people.

I live in Lee County and we need good teachers! I don't know if I would recommend this place to live however. As far as fun and excitement there isn't much. There is always the beach or downtown Fort Myers which is trying to get better. If you live in Collier County, Fifth Ave is the place to go for dinner and drinks and maybe some dancing. Besides shopping and eating there isn't much to do. I have heard the politics are bad in the school system around here but I don't why. Also don't forget about high cost of living and a small salary, finding a house or apartment could be a challenge here. Not to mention the crazy property taxes and homeowners insurance battle. Good luck!

And P.S, most Floridans are very nice! ;)

Collier County- beautiful but too expensive for teachers. Can you afford $1500 a month for decent apt? Also very old folks and few young.
Lee? Sh-tty school system.
Try Seminole county. Good system, close to Orlando and the east coast.

Lots of crime in Florida public schools. Select a small town, not a big city. Lots of senior citizens in those counties--not a very fun and exciting environment. Why don't you look for work in a state that has fewer criminals and vagrants? Most Floridians are not very friendly, unless you go to the more rural areas of the state. If you truly want hospitality in a hot climate, try other parts of the American South.

Hillsborough includes Tampa, and there is a shortage of Teachers, and a fun environment, I would commute from a nearby county, because hillsborough has become pricey!

If you want to be north of the Orlando area, check out Ocala, Florida. That is one area that I recently looked into. It is more rural that other parts of Florida, but if you have kids, it is supposed to be a great place to raise them!!
