Your OB will give you a small bottle to drink it will either be like coke with allot of sugar or yellow liquid that does not taste that great. The type of drink you get depends on the doctor’s preference. I got coke and my friend got yellow stuff that made her sick. Your blood will be drawn within an hour after drinking it. You should not have eaten anything before drinking the liquid and before your blood is drawn. After they take your blood the results will be available next day (if they have a lab on site) or within a week (if they need to send it out). If you can ask your doctor to give you the drink to take with you home so that you can drink it before coming in and not have to wait there for 1 hour to get your test done. You can’t eat anything, not even gum or tick-tack take an apple or a snack with you so that you can eat after its done. Some people advice to go on a diet before a sugar test, but I don’t advice that, neither did not OB. If you go on a sugar free/reduced diet and your blood test is normal you will go back to eating the way you were before and that could include allot of sugar and undetected pregnancy diabetes. It’s like you are lying to your self. If you pass the test with a normal diet there is nothing to worry about, if you do not pass the test your doctor will ask you to take a 3 hour test. It’s the same thing only this time you will get a white drink or the same yellow drink but it will be sweeter. They will take your blood right after you drink it, 1 hour after you drink it, 2h after you drink it and finall3 hours after. You will have to hand around the hospital for that time and not eat anything but you can drink water. Take water with you, you will get thirsty. After they are done you can eat, I would advice to take a snack you will get hungry and moody during that time, also take something to read or do while you wait.
For the third test you can go on a sugar free/reduced diet that you think you can keep up for the rest of your pregnancy. And I would advice you to do that so that you can see if it’s enough to lover your glucose level.
I failed my first one badly (196). Watched my diet before going for the 3 hour test and did great (76 think). I did not have preg-diabetes and my baby had great glucose levels when she was born. You should watch for sugars in juices, chocolate, ice cream, etc. Even though I cut down on sweets I was getting lots of sugar from juice, esp orange juices and fruits. (Went crazy of these) My OB advised to mix juice with water 50/50 or 60/40. Less (no) sugar in tea or coffee, even sugar substitutes are bad (splenda). You are better off having real sugar. I still enjoyed an occasional brownie and ice cream, try sugar free ice cream and candy to control your sugar even if it‘s not high. Congratulations and good luck.
p.s. sign up for the earliest tests possible because you are not allowed to eat that whole time and it will be harder with mid-day tests because you have not eaten anything since you woke up.

U should have been given a drink mixture to take home with u or they will give it to u when u arrive. U will follow the directions the doc gave u and then within an hour of drinking the drink, u will be sent for blood work. thats it. u will find out at your next visit how it went. Or they will instruct u to call on a particular day if necessary.
Just follow the directions they give u and u will be fine. The drink isnt bad tasting. Mine was orange and ur probably will be too. Tastes like cool aid in a way.
If u mess up on the directions, u will be required to drink another drink and the second one will make u very ill as I was told. So, avoid that at all costs.
Good luck to u.

When doing a gluc test they tell you to come in with an empty stomach.. The results usually come in within the week.. Leading up to the test I would eat healthy and watch your sugar intake.. If you need to know more call the office they will be more then happy to let you know what to expect..

I have mine on april 5th and they gave me a bottle of orange stuff to drink 30 minutes before I go in. Mine is early in the morning so I won't eat anything before it but I can if I want as long as I don't eat to much sugar and I can't eat anything after I drink the stuff not even a stick of gum. They said they would draw blood one hour after I drink the orange stuff. They will make you do a four hour test (more orange stuff more blood drawn) if anything comes up wrong. Don't worry about it to much right now. Good Luck!

i just did my test last monday, and i have my doc. app tom. to go over the results,
Theres nothing you have to do to prepare for the test there going to take blood work, give you this sugar drink (kind of like gatorade) while your waiting 1 hr for the second blood test. You have to fast which means you dont eat anything or drink anything (only water) 8 hrs before the test. If you fail you have to go back for anyother test thats 3 hours long.

When pregnant they dont make you fast for the glucose test, although it is boring, you just go in, doesnt really take anything to be prepared, do whatever you normally do, eat what you normally do, it won't matter, it tests for gestational diabetes, either you are or aren't, what you do before hand won't change that, it only tests for if you are at risk, then you do another test that does involve fasting. the one you are doing you go to and they make you drink this nasty flat orange pop tasting drink within like 10minutes or something like that then you waste an hour there, doing nothing, bring a book, lol, then they take your blood, and you are all done.

its no big deal the worst thing about it is the drink they give you to drink. you don't have to do anything different than any other Dr apt you go they will draw blood and then give you the drink it is really nasty you have to drink it down as quickly as possible you wait a hour and then they draw your blood and that is all you go back for your test results usually at your next visit if your sugar is high then you have to go back for a 3 hr test.i was a diabetic with my last pregnancy

Don't eat sugar, eat meat, vegetables and fruit - no breads or pastas or rice. Usually the glucose test is a fasting one so you should call the doctor's office and fine out when you should stop eating the night before the test.
Oh, no potatoes.
