OK, here's the scoop: A friend of mine told me that her grandson is struggling in reading and writing, and that he might fail kindergarten. She told me that his teacher said he is a bad writer, reader, and overall student. She enlisted my help, and I have an idea on how I can help since I have been a "tutor" since middle school. However, I want your insight on how to help a five-year-old who is struggling academically. What can I do to help him? What all do you suggestion? What worked for you? Thank you in advance. :)

You should buy some workbooks for alphabet and reading. I suggest you work on sight words, words that students learn without phonics that is common such as and, your, he etc.

Athough helping him get his phonics in order and tutoring him and such will improve his standing, I want to suggest something that will help him for the rest of his school years. I suggest letting him repeat kindergarten. If he's 5 and is almost finishing kindergarten, he maybe too young. I know that technically he wasn't too youn gto get in, but it sounds like that decision may have been made a year too soon. If he repeats then he'll still be with kids his own age and he will find the confidence to do better forever, not just in kindergarten. It won't be failing kindergarten, it will just have been that he started it too soon and it was decided he should be with kids that are his level and mostly his age.

First of all of need to see if he know the sounds of each of the letters. You can not read or write until you know those. You can use flash cards. Example "A" says a as in apple. "B" says b as in bear. After he has mastered the letter sounds start with simple sentences that have rebuses.Example I see a (picture of a cat) which is the rebus and the word cat underneath. The important sight words a kindegartener needs to know start with: I, see, the, a, and, me and you. You can ask the teacher to give you the entire list. Don't worry about the writing as he needs to be able to know the letter sounds before he can write them. As his reading improves so will his writing. Boys mature later then girls. I am a first grade teacher. If he is retained, Kindergarten is the best place to retain. You can go to the local educational store and get the materials you need. Good luck

First I would talk to his doctor to see if he has a learning disability.
