From my point of view (as a liberal who votes Democrat) - because the right-wingers won't butt out of peoples' bedrooms and personal lives.

Also, because the rich people (who are usually Republican) hate the idea of sharing anything with other people.

This is only one person's viewpoint, so check out what other posters say, too.

Theoretically, Democrats are for big federal government and loads of federal regulations while Republicans are for small federal government and for more state power. However today the majority of what we hear from the parties deal mostly with liberal vs. conservative issues rather than Dem. vs. Rep. Interestingly, in most democratic nations, especially in Europe, there are more than two parties and thus more than two lousy choices for president.

Are you prolife or proabortion?
Do you support gay marriage or not?
Do you think we have an obligation to carry the sick and poor?

These are all issues which divide us so deeply. Even amoung Ds and Rs there are factions.

When America was founded most people agreed on most things, and then there were a few things that we never agreed on. After 231 years we found a whole lot of things that people disagree on.

Even if there were no parties, people would band together in us vs. them. Think about it, what good is one vote alone? Now if you find people that agree with you and you all vote for that then POOF you have a political party.

Humans are animals, and just because we have contrived some convoluted (fun with cons!) system of governing, we are still tribal in nature.

A strong party system like this makes a dictatorship impossible. When everyone agrees on a leader, then that leader may absorb too much power (same with a whole political party). Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely.

I don't have a problem with political parties. It's when the mudslining and insults and corruption start that I have a problem. However, the media loves drama, and you hear more about the extreme, combative wackos than people who are actually reasonable. Most people, in fact, get along just fine. You never hear anything about the silent majority.

Good question and if the people understood they would forget rep or dem's and understand the term divide and conquer. Do you realize our government is trying to stop communication over seas on the internet. They dont want information sharing to be obtainable therefore we are easy prey for their propaganda.

A very good question.

If you will look closely at the behavior of both parties, and see how the exact same actions are treated differently depending on which party the actor belongs to, you will have your answer.

Because in the 1960's, there came the idea that America was the enemy, and that only the young generation of that time knew what was good for the country. Now, that young generation is in control, and they don't intend to give it up.The liberals usurped the Democratic party and because they SOUND like they "care", and they "want what's best for you", they expect you to relinquish your choice to them, and be happy about it. Conservatives, real ones, want little government, they want morality of action and thought, and they want law and order. Doesn't that seem better? Also, neither of the mainstream political parties seems to have its head on straight, don't you agree? They both have self-interest at heart totally, and neither cares what's best for the country.

It is not just the people and it may in fact have started from the government itself. There are no politicians that follow the will of the people.
