When "soccer" was introduced to the US it was called football. but at that time there were not too many rules and many people got hurt. the game was banned for many years until it was formed "illegally' for some time. after time some people started to pick the ball up and run with it, which pissed the others off. the continued to get violent. "soccer" was later tried to be reintroduced but they put many new rules into it to make it safer. it wasn't uncommon for people to break legs and arms to get the ball. for the most part people didn't like all the rules so they split off. since "football" was still around and being used the word soccer was founded for the "new sport". that is a short reason for it. it is actually really interesting. i did a report in High school on the history of soccer. in the true form football is soccer. the same question can be returned to other countries. why do you call football, football and our football, american football. why can't you call american football. soccer? did you follow me on that one.

its only americans who call it soccer. We (english) invented the game so surely we get the right to name it. I think its so you americans dont get confused with your football even though you mainly use you hands. both sports are played in this country we just call it american football instead of trying to rename a sport

americans call it soccer.

americans are a bit different and dont follow the crowd. other countries use kilometers to measure distance...we use miles. we use pounds (lbs) to measure weight...other places use kilograms or stones, etc. we also have a different metric system...using inches while others use centimeters...

america does its own thing and doesnt really care if others follow or not...just look at iraq :)
