The most important thing is strike-zone awareness. If you don't have a keen eye for the strike-zone, you will not have superior success, i.e. Pujols and Bonds. Hand-eye coordination definitely helps along with strong, quick wrists to generate bat spped and to adjust to an offspeed pitch and/or inside/outside pitch.

It is a combination of many things. Hand to eye cordination is the start, work ethic is the next, knowing what pitchers throw in certain situations is another, and being able to locate the seams on the ball to know what is coming at you. Truly great hitters never go in slumps as regular players do. They do not have 0 for 24 streaks. They have the ability to hit them where they ain't so to speak.

The reason Pujols and Soriano can hit a baseball like that is because of their ability to read the pitch, see the baseball clearly, have a nice level swing, and to make contact,.

all that the previous poster said is correct...hand/eye coordination and bat speed. u also need discipline too. that keeps u from swinging out of the strike zone most of the time.
even though bonds is under extreme scrutiny for the alleged steroid use, his discipline at the plate is very good. though he gets walked a lot (or did at least) when they did give him good pitches to hit he hit em'.
something someone like sammy sosa could never do...too much of a free swinger...

It's all about bat speed. That combined with hand/eye coordination. Bat speed is great, but if you don't know where to swing, all you're doing is making a good looking strike. Bat speed and strength leads to home runs

Ted WIlliams supposedly had better than 20/20 vision....so good eye site with eye/hand coordination. Also, good bat speed is helpful.

Bat speed, and reading pitchers. Tony Gwynn, and Manny look at scouting reports, and match the pitch to the pitchers delivery. Those guys made it a science.

very quick wrists and direct movement with the bat-to the ball.
no swivling of the bat all over before you swing. just a direct path to the ball.
many players of the past few years have switched from them old school swings to the one bonds perfected (that slight tap of the front foot before they swing)
as little BEFORE HAND movement as possible.

Concentration, consistency and a good swing at a good pitch.
You must be ready to hit every pitch. Only swing at good pitches. Make the same swing every time.
