I've tried troubleshooting it and testing and rolling back to previous time and still nothing...I've had this computer for 7 years...Could somebody help me..? Will I need to put it out of its misery and buy another cd-writer? I have space for a dvd.. oh, by the way My computer is a Windows XP..

The lens in your CD-writer has worn out. Its understandable that since you've used the computer for 7 years with the same CD-writer, its lens could have worn out. It is better you replace it with a DVD-writer which lasts longer and has wider coverage of many formats. From VCD to DVD formats.

Go to control panel and locate the CD-RW drive, right click it and uninstall. Reboot.

If that don't work, have you moved the drive from where it was originally installed? As it may be the jumper setting on the back of the drive, if its not set right, it wont allow it to work properly.. Check the jumpers and make sure its set to (If you only have one CD drive, MASTER, OR MA. If you have two drives, set it to master and the other one slave.

ok :according to your "Windows xp it must have an
Cd-writer/DvD -Rom Combo installed into the Computer's
Tower which it requires (48x32x16x48x Max Speed) where

If it is 7 years old then yes I would replace it.You can get cheap drives starting at about $20...good luck
