Can I use one modem for both my PC and xbox 360?

if i keep my xbox close to my modem and PC can I just unplug the cable from my PC and connect it to the xbox and vice versa? will there be consequences if i do this. if yes what kind and if i cant do this what are some cheap reliable routers(i only need one with two "out" ports) i can buy.

Should just get a router and save all the trouble.

No, your Xbox360 requires a broadband conection for Xbox Live.
