I watched the Disney movie Song of the South with my little boy yesterday. He was enchanted with the tales from Uncle Remus. I wonder if a book exist of these collection of stories.

Amazon has several editions of Uncle Remus stories. There are several here. The writer given credit for writing the stories down was Joel Chandler Harris.

My favorite ones have Brer Rabbit being caught by the fox and begging the fox, "Don't throw me in that briar patch," knowing all the time that the briar patch was his home, and where he wanted to be.

I think the best edition is Julius Lester's Tales of Uncle Remus. The original stories were transcribed in the Gullah dialect of the former slaves who told them, and that is very hard to read. I think the Disney, and other short Little-Golden-Book type translations simplify the tales too much. When you finish these, if you like trickster tales, try the Anansi stories (in the folktale section of the library) and the Iktomi stories by Paul Goble.

Happy Reading!

I remember the books from my childhood.
Uncle Remus wrote the books about br'er rabbit and his friends. I am not sure if you can still get them as there was some ado a while ago accusing the books of being racist (even though uncle remus himself was black).

I had a book when I was small, but it's long gone. I would imagine that someone is still publishing them somewhere. Try your local librarian if she knows if they are still being published. She has a way to check on what is out there.

The book does indeed exist, it is commonly available and not expensive. Try amazon.
