The New Deal was an economic plan to help the US rise out of the depression.
It included Social Security, some welfare benefits, and other social welfare programs.
It's biggest component was the piece that "created" jobs by building up America's infrastructure. I believe the Army Corps of Engineers came out of this, which put men to work building public works like bridges, dams, roads, shelters, etc. as a means to help the US and give people jobs.

President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was an attempt of the government to deal with an economic collapse in America that is hard to comprehend today. He came into office in 1933, with unemployment at about 33 percent, underemployment also high. Banks were collapsing all across the country. People were starving, eating out of garbage cans. There is no question it is the greatest economic problem the United States has ever faced. At a time when farmers were 30 percent of the population, prices in cotton, corn, and wheat fell to nothing. A Dust Bowl compounded the problem. In short, lack of rain and wind storms blew the top soil off of many midwestern farms.
In the 1920s the Republican presidents went too far with tax cuts, wages were too low, the stock market and financial instutions were unregulated. Trickle down economics did not work then. One problem was the excessively pro-business policies of the Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon, who served under Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. Calvin Coolige was truly in the pocket of big business, giving them huge breaks, no taxes, and doing absolutely nothing to help farmers, who suffered a serious depression before the rest of the nation. President Coolidge's Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover actually was much wiser. Unfortunately, for Hoover he took office in March 1929 and the Great Depression began in October 1929.
The cause of the Great Depression then could not really fairly be put on Hoover, but to make a long story short he had no policy to deal with it. It just got worse and worse. Bread lines, bank failures, 1930s homeless on very grand scale.
FDR's New Deal did take action. President Roosevelt stopped the talking and took action. I do not have space to discuss as I would like. But just consider Franklin Roosevelt is the only president to be elected to more than two terms, FOUR, and all LANDSLIDES. Therefore, the New Deal had to do something right. It reformed Wall Street, banks and the stock market. The New Deal created jobs building courthouses, libraries, roads, and conservation work to areas that had been stripped by lumber and mining industries. It is complicated, but Roosevelt did reform farming providing liveable wages. Social Security was created. In the South the Tennessee Valley Authority provided power and controlled flooding in what had been a virtually useless wilderness.
It is true that World War II was what actually ended the Great Depression, but people respected the fact that Roosevelt actually acted. He did not use trickle down economics, which was Hoover's approach. FDR's approach with the New Deal could be characterized as pragmatic and compassionate.

The New Deal was a series of goverment programs implemented by FDR's administration to combat the unemployment caused by the Great Depression. Some of the more famous programs were the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Tennesse Valley Authority (TVA). The New Deal also created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC); this institution insured personal holdings in banks to ensure individual account holders would lose everything in a bank collapse.
