After a person has been sentence, no. In the US, that's forbidden under the constitutional Ex Post Facto clause.
Before a person commits a crime, the limits can be set by the legislature. So, it all depends on what the statue currently says. If a state has a penalty of 1-3 years, then doubling it isn't unreasonable. If a state has a penalty of 20-to-life, then doubling it would be 40 years minimum -- which is much longer than most murder sentences.
So, it all depends on context, and whether you're talking about extending just the maximum or the minimum as well.

I don't know what the number is currently, but I would think for certain armed robberies that yes it would be (for example armed robbery in connection to a sizable illeagle drug crime).

absolutely not. I want child molesters and rapists in prison not the pot heads and bank robbers. Why has it been so long since I read bank robber kills people while robbing bank? It just doesnt happen they arent a threat to us just the banking industry. The guy grilling his girlfriend and child molesters are what need locking up!!!
