i've been looking in the newspaper for apartments and all these ads seem so great. they charge a "small fee" but some don't do credit checks which would be great for me but the prices seem a little too good to be true. do they offer listings that you can't find just looking online or in the paper?

You really need to be careful here. I was looking for an apartment in NYC last year, and got hooked up with a broker that promised the world but delivered nothing. If you're in the U.S., check out Craigs list (www.craigslist.com) for your area. Ask around, and double check any boker you might be considering. A professional front is an easy snow job.

-----My apartment locator was very worth it in Los Angeles. In the D.C. area, it was a $100 rip-off. Be very careful. ---Jim
