Actually there are more uses to matrices that poeple think. So many that in fact there is a computer language that works in that principle. The language is call APL (by Iverson) and that simplified version called J. once you learn APL you turn to see (actually more like force to see) all programming problems as a multi-dimensional matrix.

Most people think of matrices as a way to solve multiple equations. Which is true. But other uses are for transformation (used in all 3D games, video software, and in physics). Spreadsheets are specialized matrices.

But there are non mathematical uses of a matrix for instance.
The screen in you cell phone, computer, or electronic devices (be monochrome or color) is a matrix of dots. You need to firgure out what dots to turn on and which to leave off to create and image. Same goes for most printers (laser, inkjets and impact printers).

Also you can use matrices for word problems. Like working on a paragraph.

I could go on but it would take much more to explain. I always wonder why people ask the question.
