long piece = x short piece = y the full of the two products is 14 yds. x + y = 14 exhibit x in terms of y x = (14 - y) 3 time the long piece is 4 circumstances and so on. 3x = 4y replace for x from the unique equation 3 * (14 - y) = 4y improve & simplify 40 two - 3y = 4y 40 two = 7y y = 40 two/7 y = 6 subsititue lower back into unique equation as x + y = 14 x = 14 - y x = 14 - 6 x = 8 long piece 8 yds short piece 6 yds

equation1: 3x = 4y
so x=4/3y

equation 2: x + y = 14yards

substituting: 4/3y + y = 14
so 7/3y = 14
and 7y = 42
so y = 6 yards

substituting in equation2: x + y = 14 yards
so x = 14 - 6 = 8 yards

x = long piece
14-x = short piece

3x = 4(14-x)
3x = 56 - 4x
7x = 56
x = 8 = long piece
14-x = 6 = short piece

Check
3*8 = 4* 6
24=24
