After the 1991 Gulf War, the United Nations passed a resolution demanding that Iraq stop all production of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, destroy all those weapons it had, and let the U.N. check to see that this was all done.

Because of Iraq's previous aggression against its own Kurdish population, Iran and Kuwait, no-fly zones were imposed in the north and south of the country.

Iraq refused to cooperate with the U.N. for its weapons programs and refused to abide by the rules for the no-fly zones.

After the 9/11 attacks, there also was concern that Iraq was providing aid to terrorists who were either directly involved with those attacks or shared the same goals of destroying the United States and Western civilization.

After 12 years of trying to get Iraq to cooperate with U.N., the United States and a coalition of about 40 countries used military force to go into Iraq, overthrow the government and enforce the U.N. regulations, despite the U.N. not agreeing to the action.

It has since been discovered that Iraq had either hid or destroyed its banned weapons, though it still had all the machinery and research to start up on weapon production at a moment's notice. And it came out last week that Iraq had in fact given sanctuary to terrorists involved with the first World Trade Center attack. Before that, it was well known that Iraq funded terrorist activity in other countries, including Israel and Palestine.

It was also discovered that at the same time the U.N. declared the military action against Iraq as illegal, the head of the U.N. and his family were making millions of dollars by illegally dealing with Iraq in violation of trade restrictions that the U.N. itself had ordered.

According to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, here are the reasons for starting the war:

Self-defense:
Find and eliminate weapons of mass destruction, weapons programs, and terrorists
Collect intelligence on networks of weapons of mass destruction and terrorists

Humanitarian:
End sanctions and deliver humanitarian support

Regime Change:
End the Saddam Hussein government
Help Iraq's transition to democratic self-rule

Economic:
Secure Iraq's oil fields and other resources

The western world and especially the USA suspected strongly that Iraq was arming with so called weapons of mass destruction and was supporting international terrorism. This was based mainly on intelligence services reports that, like always, were foggy at best. President Bush, faced with contradictory intelligence, picked the ones that supported what he already believed so saw a cause for ending the dual threat by military action. Diplomacy had failed for some ten years. The USA and some allies are still there because the nation-building effort was thwarted by radical Islamacists by their random killings of Iraqi people that have started a civil war. Now the USA and allies faces capitulation or staying in a conflict that cannot be won with non-Iraqi intervention and supporting a government that has supporters that are ethnically cleansing certain areas. Probably the best case scenario is to pull combat troops back to and seal the Syrian border while using it as a stick along with diplomatic carrots.

Bush had planned to do this each and anybody alongside. We used the panic after 9/11 to make palatable the assumption of attacking a gently defended united states of america that befell to be sitting on suitable of the worlds 2d greatest petrolium reserves. introduced on by way of Neo Conservative thinkers including Wolfowitz, Libby, vice chairman Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Richard Pearle the call replaced into made to drum up a pretend justification and scare the congress and domicile into giving extensive decision on conflict powers. The Neo Conservative doctrine noted as the undertaking for a clean American Century laid down a stratege for growing to be US friendly democracies in midsection East - extraordinarily the place there is oil to be stumbled on. WE had no ethical justification for this invasion and occupation. final notice; Jeffrey's : Do you definitely think of Iraq had something to do with 9/11? Why? paintings at domicile: that's real. there isn't a shred of info linking Iraq and 9/11 - different than on your techniques. call calling won't regulate that. Even Bush and Rumsfeld admitted there is not any connection between the two. i think you know greater effective than they do?

Well, After September 11, 2001, George W. Bush (Jr.) decided to go after the terrorists. But as we all know the terrorists (like Osama) were in the Afghanistan mountains. But we went to Iraq. Why? Well, some people really don't understand why but to go steal Oil from Saddam Husein. But some people think, (like on Fahrenheit 9/11) that Bush went in because Husein and George W. Bush's father were enemies. And the Bush's were very good friends with the Osama's (a terrorist) ave the Bush's money, and sold oil to the U.S. . This is actually all on Fahrenheit 9/11 and in my new history book this year. And here's a link:

Bush said that we went into Iraq to destroy weapons of mass destruction, but nothing really has been found. When he says weapons of mass destruction, he means illegal weapons.

Ask your history teacher or a parent about why we went into Iraq and I'm sure they will make it clearer. I also read books by Thomas Friedman like "The world is Flat" and his articles in the International Herald Tribune. They are sooo good! ~hope this helped

Yea it does go back to 1991 Iraq War or even farther back in time. Since 1991 Iraq War there have been many Iraqis who asked the US congress to remove Saddam and many in the US wanted that too. The US actually carried out numerous airstrikes in Iraq in 1990s out of public awareness. In 1998 Clinton's administration passed bill which made 'regime change' our official Iraq policy. After 9/11/01 they were able to gain public support needed to go to big war to remove Saddam.

Or you can watch this online too.

To make sure no fast food restaurants open in the middle east. If they get fat and lazy they might stop producing oil. Also the American government wants to ban cigarette smoking around the globe.
