just a google, or yahoo search works well, if you use advanced operators.
http://www.google.com/advanced_search
type their name, BUT, like this...
"Joe Smith"
use the quotes.
then, if theres lots of results, type in the state, like this

"Joe Smith" alambama
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Joe+Smith%22+alabama

or, if they are a musician, try...
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Joe+Smith%22+music

if you know what area code they are (or were) in, try that too
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Joe+Smith%22+504

any club they are in, or place they work etc...

Aloha from Down Unda!
The standard answers above may work fine but last week we punched a name into 'Google Images' & sure enough, there was a picture of a friend of 30 years ago! Unfortunately, when we went to his website & sent an email, we got back the news that he passed on two months ago! Extremely sad but pure proof that the internet has a gazillion ways to do a bizilliontrilion things. Best wishes ~

Yahoo people search.
Myspace
Google search

Depends on how much you know about the person really but any of the three above can get you started.

i would go to myspace.com and make a profile then go to search and type in your old friends name, 90% of people have a myspace account so try that
