The "host plant"?
As to the specific species - that will depend on the butterfly in question. Different butterflies prefer different plants. Monarchs need to lay their eggs on Milkweed - because that's what their catterpillars need to eat.

For monarch it is milkweed, just plat flowers and shrubs that attract butterflies.

I thought they build what is known as a cocoon then they turn into a butterfly.That has always been my understanding.
