I guess I'll have to go out on a "limb" and say I don't know... why do they ?
I went to the bank to coin a phrase and was given a penny for my

They branch to get more niches and more niches they get the better and qualified bank they are. If bank don't branch, there would be no you, me or others to loan or bank for. They need us for money so that in turn they can let others borrow our money, etc. That's how they built their reputations. Its all about money, and bank that is more popular is where my money will be. My money will be stable.
