Try and think of it as a soup. Add a few ingredients here and there, throw in some big potatoes, and some carrots, and you'll find you have a nice soup. This soup has been boiling for a while now, I wouldn't assume in any way that treating someone badly will lead to their becoming a serial killer - but you were that little extra pinch of salt in that boiling soup. You are responsible, but only in so far as you are only a small part in what gives the soup it's peculiar taste.
You have to understand, many of these criminals did not choose to become criminals - it is not a choice they have made since childhood. Many of them come from a dysfunctional family, have inadequate parents (eg. alcoholics, abusers, etc), many have reported at not having even a father or in other cases a mother figure in their life, they haven't learnt about love and how to socialize in healthy ways with other people because it has never been shown to them, and the majority of them have gone through this even before they have started to go through puberty. When they do reach puberty, these damaged children are unable to develop the social skills that are the precursors to sexual skills which are part having a positive emotional relationship with another person. The quality of the relationship a person has with their immediate family is the most important factor in the way that person will relate to non-family members.
You aren't being paranoid, you are being responsible, and I respect that. Rather than being passive, and selfish, we can learn to start treating other people with dignity and respect, and in very positives ways will lead to living in a healthier society.

Well, it is not likely they will become a serial killer. A serial killer has more of a psychological problem than any "mean" treatment is going to be responsible for. To a certain respect, the hard-wiring of a serial killer is already in place when you interact with them, but to a certain extent their environment does have an effect in bringing out their worst side. In other words, your treatment of a person can, potentially, bring out their bad side. Whether that bad side results in them being a "serial killer" is highly unlikely, unless they are already pre-disposed toward that kind of life. That said, the basic premise here holds true: everything you do to someone has an effect. Negative treatment has a negative effect on people. Likely all your poor treatment of a person is going to do is hurt their self-esteem and confidence, and they will react negatively toward you as a result. It is better to treat people with kindness and respect. If you do this, they will treat you the same. So yes, you are being paranoid... but also, you are right that it is MUCH better to avoid being purposefully hateful to anyone.

Don't spend time being afraid of what might happen. It is good that you are aware how your actions, no matter how small, can affect someone else. It's always a good choice to be nice to people, for many reasons. You can't spend life worrying. Just do the best you can with the day you're living in.

You are not responsible for another person's actions. Here's the flip-side. If you're nice to someone, you could be accused of enabling them and then they go forth in life doing horrible things.
But it's always best just not to be a mean person in general.
