my drummer has had a few kits, and he prefers his Tama or his Pearl kit.

That all depends upon the sound you're looking for.
If you want the best balance of tone at a great price, I'd say look at the Gretsch Catalina series, or the Ludwig Accent "signature" kits (Zep, Fab Four). They are both pro-sounding, and would suit a rock band very well.

Screw tama and pearl! I have been playing for 15 yrs and have had my different brands and lately I have had good luck with Sonor and Mapex, also most of the time Mapex runs sales with buying drumsets and getting and extra tom or snare for free.

I'd suggest Pearl. I have seen a lot of professional rock bands use pearl.

Get Pearl 4-toms, bass, and snare. Buy Zidjjian cymbals if you want ne ones. Pearl cymbals are mediocre
