The main bottleneck with modern day computers is the start up entries... After installing software/drivers such as a Webcam, they like to "brand" you with there software so they add startup entries into the registry... So when you turn on your computer - this programs load up, hogging your computers memory(Ram)... Yes getting a memory upgrade would help, but it isnt the "easiest" method as the topic is about. Go to Start menu -> Run -> Type msconfig
Go to startup entrys... Delete non needed startup programs, if you are unsure type the filename into google and usually it will give you a good idea what the programs function is

1. Clean out your temporary internet files and do this regularly.
2. Invest in a Spyware removal/blocker and anti-virus software. Spy Sweeper is a good one and highly recommended by several experts (including Dell, Microsoft, and Kim Komando). I think you'll find that this will improve your speed trememdously almost immediately.
3. Click [Start] then [run], then type "msconfig". Click the "Startup" tab at the end and uncheck any programs you don't want the computer to "start up" when you log on or turn on your computer.
4. Defrag monthly if not every other week or weekly.
I do this on a regular basis on my daughter's computer because she's got a ton of CRAP on it and this keep the performance up.

Using registry cleaner can fix your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there are some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

if you have XP an excellent way of getting the startup faster is to delete your event log. If you have many events in the log, Windows loads all the events in RAM,(Events.dll) and thus slows it down. Deleting the log works instantly. It is a known issue, and Microsoft has a KB on it. I just don't remember the KB article.

u should check your startup programs, maybe too many programs running which causing the system startup slow... Such as antivirus, msn messenger and etc...
Other than that u have to check your system hardwares also, such as have enough memory/ram or not...
It is recommended min. 512MB ram for window xp if u want to run smooth ...

You have to explain more about your system. If you have Norton running, it can drastically slow down your system.
Slow systems also due to:
Not enough ram
Slow processor
Full disc
Haven't defragged
Lots of icons open on the 'right hand side of your window' (they use ram)

Well, since you don't provide any information ABOUT your computer, you could really not expect an answer. What operating system? How much RAM? How many programs are you running all at the same time? How much space is remaining on your hard drive? I can't help you if you don't give me anything to go on.

On the hardware side: Overclock the FSB, tighten the RAM timings. If that does not help, the RAM timings are too tight, and need to be loosened. On the software side: do virus/spyware scans.
