Because dress say so...because Nurses don't want to take the time assisting women as they roam their rooms squatting or on all fours, when instead they could pump a woman full of drugs and leave.. It sad u think of a woman in labor or giving birth and you picture a sweaty woman on her back legs in the air gripping the bed rails its all you see so that's what women do its what their "supposed to do"... If left to their own i don't think many if any women would choose to labor or birth on their backs...not Only is thee most painful position to be in, its counter productive, and can lead to baby positioning improperly which only makes more pain and increases risk of complications....i For one believe out outrageous epidural rates in the u.s (over 80%) are in part due to the fact women are expected to birth on their backs... Pain and pressure on your spine and hips, not to mention the extra time it takes to dilate due to the lack of extra pressure from the baby's head on the cervix when gravity is taken out the picture...

Its sad that so many women don't know better...or Don't know there are other options ...its Sad that hospitals view birth as an illness needed to be tended to with bedrest and medication

This is an aspect of childbearing all women need to be informed of ....birth In this country is in desperate need of an overhauling...we Need to step back and view birth as what it is a natural process that can be handled in natural ways...not An illness

I see that a lot of mother here are really brainwashed.
They are talking like the doctors comfort is a really important factor in childbirth.
In MY childbirth , MY ease of delivery and MY perineum really matter to me. So what if a doctor has to kneel or squat while I am in the optimal birthing position for me. Most people that go into this profession for the love of childbirth will be knowledgeable about human anatomy and physiology. I can promise you that the midwives(midwives that have followed their hearts to that profession) do NOT complain! They realize that gravity helps a woman give birth. They also know that standing up and leaning over feels OH SO GOOD!!!!!

And since when did lying on your back straighten out your birth canal !!!! LOL

Also as for the hands and knees comment that one mother made... Hands and knees positioning is optimal for a few different scenerios one being where a baby is sunny side up facing the world.. and the other being shoulder dystocia.

I guess the real question that should have been posed here is WHY DO WOMEN SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO BEING TREATED LIKE AN INANIMATE OBJECT THAT JUST DOES AS THEY ARE TOLD....

On your back is the WORST position to birth in! It is all about the doctor's convenience, they can see and reach easier that way.

Most midwives will encourage women into other positions.

Squatting is an EXCELLENT position as it opens up the pelvic outlet much wider. You can be supported by hubby or a doula or you can use a squat bar on a hospital bed, squat and hold on to some furniture, etc.

There are birthing chairs/stools that can be used.

You can birth standing or side-lying. You can birth on all fours. If you need support in that position, a birth ball is a wonderful thing to have.

Agree with what Carla said.

And laying on your back doesn't "straighten out" anything. It actually puts your tailbone IN THE WAY.

I ought to declare this replaced into ordinarily incorrect information. i'm sorry you obtain such undesirable help. Your milk DID are available, it rather is why your breasts have been given so corporation. (i myself have a scientific rationalization why my breasts can not produce milk in any usable quantity and as a result on no account particularly have been given engorged.) it rather is totally probable there replaced right into a latch undertaking. that could have been inexperience of the two you and your toddler (and you have been needless to say not getting the spectacular help if the nurse could not see if the latch appeared appropriate) or there could have been different factors stressful the undertaking, working example tongue tie. Your efforts have been thoroughly sabotaged by way of the nurses insisting your toddler needed formulation. A bottle of formulation supplies on the spot gratification. With breastfeeding the toddler has to paintings at triggering enable-down. a toddler used to a bottle can get very pissed off while that on the spot gratification does not ensue on the breast and provide up previously he triggers enable-down. finally pumping: it rather is not a good indication of ways a lot you're unquestionably waiting to produce. some women breastfeed very efficiently and nevertheless on no account be waiting to pump a lot. do not beat your self up. YOU did not do something incorrect. the people who have been meant to assist you probably did. Breastfeeding is a found out ability for the two mom and toddler, and neither of you ever have been given a real possibility to income. i can not answer you approximately relactating. I as quickly as considered giving it a bypass myself to objective mixture feeding, however the full breastfeeding test while i in my view ought to not produce had in basic terms been too traumatizing for myself and my son.

Physicians know so little about normal, natural birth. Midwives are (in general) so much cooler. I'll never give birth on my back again. (God willing, I'll never give birth again at all.) Every pregnant woman should read Birthing From Within to learn about normal, uncomplicated birth and self-advocacy. That book was perfect for me as I prepared to have a baby while my husband was away.

Why are almost ALL standards of practice during pregnancy and birth against evidence based practices.

Because OBs are misogynistic assholes who do not trust women and their bodies and apparently women are too uninformed or meek to demand better.

I second that....I will do things different when the second time comes around and I know what I am doing and now realize that the doctors work for me.

What way are we supposed to give birth? Like a birthing chair? Anyhow, I had both my kids naturally on my back, and they are healthy, happy and the birth was just fine. My daughter only took 3 hours to come. I think if I had problems with my first one, I would have done more research on what happened, but everything was fine with me.

oh so how are we suposed to be giving birth? On our stomachs so all the weight is pushing on the baby? standing up so the doctor can not get a good veiw and more likely to drop the baby? Siting where the birth cannal is not stright and passable?? you tell me how we are suposed to be giving birth. If you say on all fours i would like to see you try that when a strong contraction hits and been in that position for hours on end.

Most women give birth on their backs because they have an epidural and they can't move. Plus its the best postition for the doc or midwife to catch the baby. Most women don't complain about being on their back when giving birth.
