I live in New Orleans and when Katrina hit I was 16 about to turn 17. I was in school and I wasnt doing that well in school. But I was going to try to bring my grades up. When we left we went to Mississippi and then we found out that the house was gone and we had to stay in mississippi for awhile. I signed up for school in mississippi. I went to school and hated it people out mess with me about losing my house and stuff. So I dropped out and said I was going to get my ged. Im now 18 and we are back home so im going to get my ged soon. But I wanna go to culinary arts cook and become a chef in new orleans. But with a GED would I get accepted to a school? Thanks

Yes. The official GED is nationally recognized as a substitute for a high school diploma. Its not a cakewalk, you will have to study for it. Depending on what you have already learned in school, and how well/easily you learn, it can go quickly.
Go to a center which offers GED classes. These are often Adult Education Centers, sometimes affliated with a college or community college.
You will go in and take a series of pre-tests. Don't worry, this is not the GED test. These just show what you need to study. If you do well enough on a pre-test area, the instructor may suggest you go ahead and take that section of the GED.
Some of our students have taken 2 years, some have done it in two weeks. It just depends on your determination, and what you already know.
So I encourage you to take it. It will be accepted. Even if you don't go onto college or culinary arts school, you need a high school diploma or GED for almost any lower level job even.

I would also suggest you contact the specific school you are interested for further information. They will verify that they accept the GED, and be able to answer any other questions you might have.
