Johnny Cash, although he carefully cultivated a romantic outlaw image, never served a prison sentence, although he landed in jail seven times for misdemeanors, each stay lasting a single night. He felt great compassion for prisoners. He began performing concerts at various prisons starting in the late 1950s. These performances led to a pair of highly successful live albums, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (1968) and Johnny Cash at San Quentin (1969).

The height of Cash’s fame occurred in the late 1960s, particularly after the release of At Folsom Prison (1968) and At San Quentin (1969). These legendary live recordings sold millions in the US and internationally.
