There really is no good way to do this on XP. The security settings only work if you set up multiple profiles on your pc and assign limited rights to the ones you don't want accessing your files.
I would be careful with third party software. Folder Lock is known for crashing and damaging your files or making them completely inaccessible.
The best solution is to transfer your confidential files to a flash card that you can remove from the pc. I just bought a flash card at Best Buy for $19.95 that will hold up to 1GB of data. 1 GB should be enough for your confidential documents, pics, and music files.

Either to a back-up of those folders, which unfortunately is still on your computer if it crashes. So, I recommend downloading the specific folders or the entire program to a disk which then can be re-inserted to bring it back.
The last possible opportunity is to download or rather upload the folders to a safe site in your spare Messenger space either Yahoo or MSN. or another site that has a storage facility.

The only way you can is if you have the NTFS File System on your hard drive. Then you can set who can and cannot see certain folders. You right-click on the folder and select the Security tab.
