When I was a junior, the internet was a baby, and no one believed in it. Then, four years later, it really took off out of nowhere!
A lot of people think bioinformatics is taking off that way right now. Medical research and engineering are always in demand. (check Monster.com)
And programmers, especially in things like JSP are in demand right now. I've been offered jobs in that without any experience (I've made a couple crummy websites, and wrote an essay making fun of JSP pages because they're so slow, and suddenly got job offers in it as if I was an expert).
Around where I live, I always see adverts for biology related jobs, and other science related subjects. Occassionally someone to fix computers, in big cities for people who can do Flash, a lot of demand for secretaries (but the pay is not good).
It really depends where you want to live. Check the local paper, read the business section, that'll give you a good idea. New Scientist for science jobs, or the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times.
But, the experts are usually wrong. Events like September 11th, the end of the cold war, Nixon's impeachment, the oil crisis, prohibition, they all changed the job market so much.
Just do what you love, and you'll find a related job... most people get jobs eventually, only about 5% are unemployed, and most of them it's just temporary.

You can't go wrong with nursing. I was told that in the state of michigan there will be a shortage of 5,000 nurses. The baby boomer generation makes up about 48% of the nursing workforce. That generation will be up for retirement soon leaving a huge vacancy in nursing. Plus, as that generation ages, they will need healthcare too.
With the hours, pay, and incentives.. nursing is a good career, plus you will always have a job. Make you sure you get your bachelor's in it though, even if you choose an ADN program. You will have more options to choose from.
The nursing shortage is actually worldwide, so I'm sure California needs nurses too. You have great hospitals like Loma Linda and Cedar Sinai too!

Hi theunwin
Your being as young as you are, I really hate to break your bubble. For the most part in the United States we don't make anything anymore. In my young years we were the worlds greates manufacturing nation. That is no longer true, most of our manufacturing has gone to other nations. We are for the most part a nation given to service. The engineers in India are taking over in that area. Ford-General motors-Crysler are for the most part broke. Even big accounting firms have moved to other nations. Construction has now truned belly up.
I'm sorry but it is service, Medical, Attorney, Food Service, etc. I really hate to tell you but this nation is now entering a recession, and if it doesn't turn around, we will be in a great depression this time 2008. Your federal goverment owes $ 8 , 8 3 8 , 5 1 5 , 6 0 5 , 2 1 8 . 6 6 Yep almost 8.9 trillion. The entire national debt is almost 5.5 time that. We are the world's greatest debtor nation. Mexico is our number 3 oil provider, there oil fields are quickly drying up. They can no longer provide us with 1.5 million barrels of oil a day. I believe it has droped to about 1.2 million barrels a day, and droping.
Sorry but you are living in a service nation.
