Actually, Miss Nobody, I am an Indian (Cherokee by blood, Lakota by training) and we in fact PREFER the term Indian, NOT Native American.
A Native American is ANYONE born here. An Indian is one of the indigenous people who were here before the coming of the White Man. One thing most people don't know is that Columbus called us "Indians" not because he thought he was in the Dutch East Indies, but because the term Indios or Indeos means, literally, Children Of God, which is what many of our own names for ourselves translate into, as in The People or God's People or Natural People.
Spend some serious time on an Indian reservation (not just at the casinos) and you'll see what I mean.
And, to answer the question, jewelry is a matter of taste, although most Indian women look wonderful in it. Reason enough to wear it.

if it is asian indian women, since i am one, i can say in Delhi it is not even supposed to be modern or classy to wear jewellery. The look is minimalistic, whether make-up or jewellery. And so it is in other major cities. In South India, I have heard they like to wear jewellery. But the modern Indian women do not. In older times maybe they used to n others might have guessed the correct reason, plus used to be a sign of wealth since India is not classless like the US.

when the kings use to reign over india, they made the girls wear lots of jewelleries so if they go anywhere out of the castles, the jewelleries would make sounds...after that it became a part of indian culture. but it's not obliged. i think now women were jewelleries cuz they like to spc gold.

asian indians or native americans?
for both it's culture and to ward off evil spirits depending on the jewelery. money is another thing it could be used for. or part of a girl's dowry. it makes her more desirable to someone since she would probably have a larger dowry if she has more jewelry.

The first thing you SHOULD now is that they ´don´t like to be called indians, the proper way to refer to them is NATIVE AMERICANS.
