By looking for patterns that lead to specific events. The more rigid the patterns the better the chance of an accurate prediction. An eclipse can be accurately predicted because it is almost impossible to change the speed and path of the sun and moon and earth. Rising water may predict a flood quite well because the water is already in place. It is harder to predict rain because fronts have to meet in the right place in the right conditions.

They use a line graph. Each dot represent a special event. They use the direction of the line to learn about the future.
